CHALLENGE:
High-stakes decision-making without clear financial visibility into portfolio companies
The investment firm faced challenges in managing and extracting value from its data ecosystem. As an investment firm, they had data spread across multiple portfolio companies, funds, and business units operating across regions. Unfortunately, their existing systems did not support analysis of portfolio performance, narratives, and historical insights across dispersed funds.
The firm wanted to understand performance trends and identify drivers behind changes without spending days manually managing data. Complicating this challenge, they relied heavily on legacy SQL Server systems, which limited their ability to modernize their data infrastructure to fully leverage AI.
The firm had already identified the need to transition toward a modern data stack, but lacked a clear, scalable approach. The investment firm turned to Spaulding Ridge to bring speed, accuracy, and usability to their data systems.
SOLUTION:
A scalable, business-first data and analytics transformation
The engagement began with a focused pilot to address the company's data needs. We developed a chatbot solution powered by Snowflake CoCo and Snowflake CoWork, enabling users to query both structured data (financial numbers, performance metrics) and unstructured data (investment notes, explanations, reports) seamlessly. This allowed teams to quickly retrieve insights, such as portfolio performance metrics and narrative explanations, through a conversational interface.
Following the success of the pilot, the solution expanded into multiple parallel workstreams. We developed Fund Performance dashboards using Sigma, designed to deliver real-time insights tailored for executive use. These dashboards allowed users not only to view metrics but also to interact with the data, including adding contextual notes and ensuring timely updates.
Through Liquidity dashboards, we developed a unified view of financial metrics across business segments. These dashboards supported operational and strategic decision-making by consolidating data into a consistent, user-friendly interface.
In parallel, we launched a strategic initiative to assess the firm’s SQL Server estate and define a roadmap for modernization. This included evaluating workloads, identifying migration opportunities, and building a business case for transitioning to a modern data platform such as Snowflake. The approach focused not only on technology migration but also on establishing a framework for prioritization and value realization.
